Calling bulls**t on house hunting

Updated: Mar 27

A little over two years ago I made the move from Aberdeen back to Edinburgh and back into my parents house. After living out in the big bad world with flatmates and friends it was tough but if I ever wanted to save for a deposit it was a necessary step. The time has actually flown by and there have been very few arguments; luckily my parents have plenty space at home and due to our work commitments we hardly ever see each other which has its advantages. But a massive thanks to them for taking me back in cause without them I wouldn’t even be considering flat hunting!

Over the past couple of years, there have been a few months where it has been harder to save than others, so to keep me motivated I’ve done some imaginary house hunting. I loved this; looking for places that I could call my own, the excitement of re-decorating and shopping for cute little trinkets to really make it mine. I was so excited to start the hunt for real.

So just before Christmas, when my parents accepted an offer on their house, I started looking immediately. There was nothing…obviously, so I put it on the back burner and enjoyed the holidays with my friends and family accepting that the real fun would begin in January…

Lets just say I think I miss-judged it.

Working 50 hours a week, trying to have a bit of a social life, do some exercise and house hunting is draining! The time scrolling through websites, only to call the estate agents and find out that actually that property was all ready under offer but they’d take my details in case anything changed. Then trying to arrange viewings that are suitable to both myself and the vendor for them to just not turn up for your arranged appointment! Then you’ve got friends and family who offer their own opinions, some useful, some not so much. Don’t get me wrong I appreciate their input but also please remember its my first flat and I do not need the same things as you do.

One good thing is that you can browse the internet from the comfort of your bed with a nice warm cup of tea!

Sorry if this is all a bit of a moan, but seriously all everyone ever said to me was ‘oh it’ll be so much fun’ or ‘isn’t this exciting’.

Well you know what, No its not, the actual looking is not fun.

The real fun will begin when I have a shiny new set of keys in my hand and a place that I can call my own.
